European countries attempted to spread their values and culture throughout their colonial empires in Africa and Asia. European missionaries taught some of the colonized population to read and write, at the same time inculcating European ideas and the Christian religion. European political and scientific thinking was absorbed by an elite in the colonized countries, and became a weapon to use against European power.
